What To Do About Claims Issues
Steps to Take for Resolution
  • First, reach out to your broker (me) so I can help you determine your best course of action and find out why the claim was denied.
  • Read your health insurance policy and understand the terms and conditions.  This step should be done BEFORE you decide on a plan.
  • Learn the deadlines for appealing your health insurance claim denial.
  • Make your case by gathering all related documentation especially information that supports the necessity of the services you received.
  • Write a concise & timely appeal letter that includes all of your supporting documentation and be sure it's mailed & received before the appeal deadline (varies).

Many States have set up new rules regarding claims disputes and resolutions.  These new rules puts more of the burden on the insurance company and the provider with the hope of leaving you out of the process as much as possible.

Best Tips For Avoiding Claims Issues

Claims issues can't entirely be avoided but they can be reduced by following these tips:

Make sure your providers are in the network BEFORE you decide on a plan.

As soon as your new ID card comes in, call ALL your current providers and update your insurance information with them.

At the time of scheduling ANY appointment, ask the providers office to please "verify your benefits"!  This simply means you are asking them to call your insurance company to make sure you're covered and for how much.  Ask them to please call you back with what you can expect to pay at the time of the appointment.  This solves two potential problems; if something is wrong with the price they give you, we have time to fix it before you're billed and it confirms they are still in the network.  Doctors are allowed to move in and out of networks all the time.  Don't get stuck with the bill!  Make sure you get your benefits "verified" everytime.
